Sandi Simon Center for Dance, Chapman University
The Sandi Simon Center for Dance (renovated by Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects / LOHA), transforms a 1918 orange packing house, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, into a multi-level education and performance center for Chapman University's dance program. LOHA's adaptive reuse strategy preserves the building's timber frame and sawtooth clerestory roof while opening the interior to light and new circulation across three levels.
Designed by IN-FO.CO, the signage and wayfinding system responds directly to the architecture: its play of transparency, light, and shadow across three interconnected levels. Transparent panels mounted on custom metal armatures reference the building's timber frame and sawtooth roof structure, while incorporating Chapman University's visual identity. Clean, contemporary typography anchors the system, letting the signs participate in, rather than compete with, the layered spatial character of the building.
